Our "New" Deck

We replaced the wood on our old deck (after 30 years) and Barry has been working very hard this week refinishing it (stain) and planting many pots of flowers around the patio. This is the view from the patio. If I turn around 180 degrees there are just bushes and trees -- very lush and green. I call it my jungle. You would never know we are surrounded by other houses. We have just planted some more bouganvillea and a cape honeysuckle in that bare patch by the fence in this photo. There is no where I'd rather be, than sitting out on our patio in the summer.

It's lovely, Chris. Wendy is quite envious, and we love your little Mexican man!

We are in a race against the elements and nature, in our garden. The weather has been so hot and dry recently; it's not great for the lawn and flowers. And all the 'critters' who come up from the ravine love our garden, but for all the wrong reasons! They (raccoons, skunks, chipmunks, rabbits, foxes) dig up our bulbs, raid the composter, make holes in the lawn, eat the flowers and make lots of dirt and smells from time to time. We wondered why our Zinnias were failing, only to discover the goldfinches love to tear off the petals to get to the seeds in the middle! Never mind! We love them all anyway!

We have similar problems. If I put bird seed out, we have a gopher that visits. Rabbits eat any bulbs and caterpillars get what's left -- not to mention snails! That's why we put most things in pots, so we can replace them if need be. And of course the watering is a big job. We've had only 3 1/2 inches in over a year now. Nearly lost a couple of shrubs and soon they will be rationing us.
